GETTING TO THE TASHI WALDORF SCHOOL

It’s a little after 8am as eight small children say hasty ‘Goodbyes’ to mothers as the children join teacher-ma’m at the designated pick-up point, for transport to school. A small, four seater (at a squash) taxi draws up. Teacher-ma’m opens the rear door and in scramble seven of the children! The rear door closes and teacher-ma’m opens the front taxi door, gets in, sits and invites the remaining child to squash-in with her! Packed like sardines in a tin, the driver heads off to the ‘Tashi Waldorf’ school, a twenty minute drive away.   This scenario is repeated in two other locations around the city. At 3.30pm, there is a repeat scenario with passengers being ferried back to their home locations. 

Twice a-day, five days a week at Nrs800 per day per vehicle, amounting to Nrs12,000 per week for all three vehicles! 

As student numbers increase, so will the expenditure on taxis to and from school! The families of these students hardly have enough money to feed and clothe their children, let alone have the financial wherewithal to transport their children to school or contribute to taxi or school fees! Many families exist in one room dwellings or in plastic covered, bamboo skeleton structures. 

What is needed, is at least one school vehicle! A 12 to 15 seater mini/micro-bus that could collect children from more than one location, would be the ideal!! But currently, that is but a dream, for there is no way in which the Tashi Waldorf school could afford to purchase such a vehicle! Must this really remain a ‘dream’? Could we not work together as a group and help? 

A used micro/mini-bus can cost anywhere between Nrs10,00,000 to Nrs15,00,000. (Nrs1,00,000 = 1 lahk). One lahk equals approximately GBP625 / EUR730 / USD845 / AUD1170 !! 

A mini-/micro-bus costing 10 lahks = GBP6,250 / EUR7,300 / USD8,500 / AUD11,700 

A mini-/micro-bus costing 15 lahks = GBP9,400 / EUR10,900 / USD12,650 / AUD17,600 

And then of course, there are the added costs of maintaining an older vehicle. 

The current price of a brand new, 12 seater micro-/mini-bus, would be in the region of USD25,000!! But whatever the price, the children attending the Tashi Waldorf school, desperately need your help in financing the purchase of a vehicle …… new or old!
